Your responsibilities

The Technology Department at CERN is responsible for the development, operation, and maintenance of key accelerator hardware, including systems such as cryogenics, vacuum, surface treatment, magnets, and machine protection. Within this department, the Safety Team plays a vital role in ensuring occupational health and safety, safeguarding the well-being of staff, collaborators, and the surrounding environment.

Join CERN as a Junior Project Safety Officer and contribute to the safe and effective delivery of complex scientific and technological projects. In this role, you'll support project teams in identifying and managing safety risks, ensuring compliance with CERN's Safety Rules, and fostering a proactive safety culture across a diverse, international environment.

Key responsibilities:

• Carry out safety risk assessments for technological processes and evaluate the conformity of prototype devices and machinery with CERN's safety requirements.
• Propose and help implement appropriate compensatory safety measures where needed, ensure follow-up on recommended actions, and maintain clear documentation of all findings.

In particular, you will:

• Keep both yourself and the Project Leader informed of all safety matters related to the project.
• Oversee the preparation and regular updating of the project's safety documentation - including the Safety File where applicable - in collaboration with the Departmental Safety Officer (DSO).
• Support the DSO in analysing incident reports, defining appropriate corrective measures, and ensuring they are put into practice.
• Assist the Project Leader and/or DSO in obtaining the relevant safety clearances in line with CERN's Safety Rules.
• Undertake any additional safety tasks assigned by the Project Leader or set out in CERN's Safety framework.
• Collaborate with other Safety Officers and Safety Support Officers, in particular the relevant DSOs, as needed.
• Work in coordination with CERN's Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection Unit, where appropriate.

In addition, you will support technical project monitoring by:

• Carrying out regular visits to the LHC tunnel to observe activities and verify compliance with established safety procedures.
• Preparing dashboards and performance assessments related to ongoing work.
• Monitoring progress against the programme of work and reporting any significant deviations to the coordination team for TE LHC LS3 activities.

Your profile

Skills

• Knowledge of risk assessment methods.
• Knowledge of technical analysis methods and reporting.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.
• Spoken and written French, with a commitment to learn English.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Occupational Health & Safety (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
• Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
• Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 03.06.2025 at 23:59 CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-September-2025

• Work in Radiation Areas.
• Interventions in underground installations.
• A valid driving licence.
