Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will be based in the Political, Peacekeeping, Humanitarian & Human Rights Unit (PU) of the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG). The incumbent is expected to work under the supervision of a Senior Political Affairs Officer. The role will include specific support to the work of the Unit in support of the EOSG work and may include (i) analysis and decision support, (ii) policy oversight and quality assurance, and (iii) promotion of system-wide coherence. The intern’s tasks will therefore include • Research, compile, and summarize diverse media products, background materials and reports to support the work of the Unit; • Substantive contributions to a variety of standard and non-standard products, including analytical notes produced by the Unit; • Assistance in the preparation of presentation materials using appropriate technology/software; • Assistance in the coordination of unit-wide activities, special projects and events, including the Political Unit Annual Retreat; • Support the Unit with its internal systematization, organization of workflows and knowledge management, including of internal databases; • A variety of other duties, as may be requested. The Unit strives to offer interns an opportunity to work independently with substantive issues while also assisting colleagues in the day-to-day operations. The incumbent will be expected to have advanced ability to conceptualize, demonstrated attention for details and the capacity to work in a multicultural and politically sensitive environment.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher such as Master's degree or equivalent, Ph.D. or post-graduate degree); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required (e.g. International Business / Economics / Political Economy • International Development • International Relations • Law • Political Science • Public Administration • Security Studies • or related fields). No work experience is required to apply for this United Nation Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. All interested candidates must: • Be computer literate in standard software applications. • Have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
