Your responsibilities

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will join the Cryostats and Machine Integration (CMI) Section of the Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) Group within the Technology (TE) Department. You will contribute to both the conceptual and detailed designs of the the thermo-mechanical design of the spectrometer magnet.

In this position, you will produce 3D CAD models, as well as structural & thermal analyses based on Finite Element Methods. You will also contribute to the preparation and execution of mock-up tests aiming at the validation of pre-established concepts prior to start the construction of the full-size magnet. Finally, you will participate in the design, fabrication and commissioning of the assembly tooling, and you will develop assembly procedures and quality control plans.

Your responsibilities:

• Produce 3D models of the spectrometer magnet assembly on 3D CAD Software CATIA V5 (this will comprise the design of tooling needed for the assembly activities).
• Carry out structural and thermal analyses of the magnet assembly, its cryostat and support system (for this, ANSYS tools are usually used in addition to analytical calculations).
• Imagine and describe mock-up tests to verify and validate certain aspects of the conceptual design before starting to manufacture the actual parts; organise the construction of the mock-ups, carry out the experiments and qualification tests; write technical reports.
• Develop and write assembly procedures consistent with the assembly drawings and quality control (QC) requirements.
• Follow up the procurement of components and tooling.

Your profile

Skills:

• Experience with 3D CAD Software, such as CATIA V5 or equivalent, and associated project life-cycle management tools;
• Structural and thermal analyses of complex mechanical assemblies;
• Experience with manufacturing mechanical parts and integration of mechanical systems;
• Experience with ANSYS (Structural Analysis and Simulations, 3D Design, Thermal Desktop);
• Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment;
• Experience with cryostats design and construction would be an asset;
• Knowledge and application of manufacturing processes would be an asset.
• Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
  • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
  • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 09.06.2025 at 23:59 CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-September-2025

This position involves:

• Interventions in underground installations.
• Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
